What should I Ask?
Asking the
right questions will give you the ability to properly evaluate the
gymnastics program that your child is interested in joining. It is
important that you ask each school the same questions so that you can do an
accurate comparison of each program. Some areas of concern should
be the structure of the program, safety issues, quality of instructors,
gymnastics developmental factors and cost. Key questions that a
parent should ask are as follows:
-
Is the program run by
volunteers or is the owner on the premises?
-
Who is the
contact person for the school if you have a problem or
question?
-
Is there
communication between the school, students and parents?
-
What is the
philosophy of the
school and its owners?
-
Is the
program structured?
-
Is the number
one goal to teach people gymnastics?
-
What is the
atmosphere/environment of the school?
-
Is the school
active in the community?
-
Is the
school's curriculum intended to produce competitive gymnasts?
-
How
successful have they been at competitions?
-
How many
participants does the school have?
-
How long has
the school been in business?
-
What are the fees
for service?
-
Do
stated fees cover all costs or will there be hidden charges?
-
What is the
payment policy?
-
How long
is the season and when does it begin?
-
How do you
register?
-
What is the time commitment
at home and/or outside
the home?
-
Are the staff
members USA Gymnastics Safety Certified?
-
Is there
appropriate equipment for the age and development level of the
students?
-
Are they a
USA Gymnastics Club member?
-
Is there an
observation area for parents?
-
Is there an
emergency plan for injuries?
-
Are
background checks done on instructors?
It
is not necessary to ask all of these questions it is simply a guideline
to help you. You may have others that you feel need to be addressed.
What's important is that you feel extremely comfortable with the program that you select. Always remember that it should be a
positive, fun experience for your child!
