Healthy Breakfast Suggestions

Why is breakfast important?

Research has shown that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After sleeping for eight hours you body has been without food and water.  Basically, you need nourishment to replenish your body.

However, what your kids eat in the morning is just as important as having the meal.  You need to choose foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein but low in added sugar.  Good nutrition is extremely important for growing children.  These types of foods may boost kids' attention span, concentration level and memory -- all of which are important in school.

Eating the proper breakfast tends to keep weight under control, reduce blood cholesterol levels, attribute to fewer absences and there are fewer trips to the nurse due to stomach complaints due to hunger.

Here are some ideas for healthy breakfasts to try:

  • Create a breakfast parfait.  Layer, granola, fruit (berries work best) and plain yogurt.

  • Whole-grain waffles topped with peanut butter, fruit, or jelly

  • Whole-wheat pita stuffed with sliced hard-cooked eggs

  • Hot oatmeal or cream of wheat

  • Peanut butter on a bagel with fresh fruit

  • Fruit smoothie

  • Bran muffin and yogurt with berries

  • Whole-wheat toast topped with hummus

  • Cream cheese and fresh fruit, such as sliced strawberries, on a bread or a bagel

  • Shredded cheese on a whole-wheat tortilla. Melt in microwave and serve with salsa.

  • Grapefruit with whole wheat toast and almond butter

  • Fruit salad -- apples, melons, grapes, berries etc (add some lime or lemon juice to keep from turning brown)

  • Peppers, eggs and tomato omelet

  • Cottage cheese and apple or pumpkin butter

  • Prepare a casserole in advance so in the morning it can just be heated

  • Create a breakfast burrito - scramble eggs with tomatoes and ham. Place in a tortilla, sprinkle with cheese and then roll it up.
