A Parent's guide to children's Christmas parties at school or at home

Christmas Games, Party Ideas, Crafts, Books, Movies, Present Ideas and Recipes

As a girl scout leader for many years and a homeroom parent for both of my children I have planned many school Christmas Parties.  You will find some great games, recipes, movies, crafts, books, present   and decorating ideas for kids parties listed below.

It is important to be organized whenever you are catering to children.  It is essential to keep the kids busy at all times.  Plan all games and crafts in advance.  Make sure you have all materials cut and ready to go.  Ask your kids about trendy Christmas music that you can play.

A routine that works for kids parties is setting up stations and then dividing the kids into equal groups.  Send each group to a station and then in 10 or 15 minutes rotate them.  Stations can include games crafts, cooking, dancing, and/or reading a story. Stick to games that everyone knows or that have simple rules.  If your games can reflect your theme that would be great.  You can rename the classic games to suit your theme.  Be sure to have an adult or older sibling at each station to help the kids complete the task.

Once stations are complete you can serve the food and sing Christmas Carols.

Decorating Ideas...

Kids love balloons and streamers and they will go a long way.  Put streamers around the tables and in the door way like a curtain.  Add bunches of balloons on the table and strategically placed in the room.  Be sure that you have enough balloons to give every kid one to take home.  Create or purchase a banner.   Use props to help create the theme.   Purchase red/green plates, napkins, silverware and table covers.   Consider using a Santa hat (stuffed with tissue paper) as a centerpiece.

Party Favors...

Sending each child home with a favor is always a great way to end the party.  You can fill a bag with small trinkets and candy or have them do a craft.  It is best if everyone gets the same favor. You may also want to have some prizes on hand for the winner of the games.
