A parent's guide to recipes for children's Christmas parties at school or at home

Christmas Games, Party Ideas, Crafts, Books, Movies, Present Ideas and Recipes

As a girl scout leader for many years and a homeroom parent for both of my children I have planned many school Christmas Parties.  You will find some great games, recipes, movies, crafts, books, present   and decorating ideas for kids parties listed below.

Christmas Wreath

Makes approximately 16

Ingredients needed:

  • 1/3 cup margarine or butter

  • 4 cups miniature marshmallows

  • 1 tsp green food coloring

  • 6 cups Kelloggs Corn Flakes

  • Red cinnamon candy

  • Vanilla frosting

1. Melt margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. Stir in food coloring.

2. Add KELLOGG'S CORN FLAKES cereal. Stir until well coated

3. Portion warm cereal mixture evenly by using a 1/4 cup size measuring cup that is clean, dry, and coated with cooking spray. Using sprayed fingers, quickly shape into individual wreaths. Dot with cinnamon candies, using prepared frosting to hold candies in place. Store in single layer in airtight container.

Note: Green paste food coloring makes the best color for wreaths

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS: Microwave margarine and marshmallows at HIGH 2 minutes in microwave-safe bowl. Stir to combine. Microwave at HIGH 1 minute longer. Stir until smooth, then add food coloring. Follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Ornament Cupcakes

Ingredients Needed:

  • Pre-bakes cupcakes
  • White, green, and red frosting
  • Red and green M&M's
  • Mini Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
  • Pretzels

Frost cooled cupcakes with white frosting

Decorate with festive red o green icing and candy.

Top each with a Reeses PB Cup and a piece of pretzel as a hanger.

Create Smoothies

You can even have ingredients and let the kids be creative and make their own.

Christmas Milk

How about "red",  or "green" milk or milk shakes? Simply add food coloring.

Fruit Kebobs

Select a variety of fruit such as strawberries, green grapes, watermelon, and kiwi. Cut into bite size pieces and put on to a skewer.

Chocolate Covered Snowman Pretzels

Ingredients Needed:

Bag of Pretzel Rods
1 cup white chocolate chips
Mini chocolate chips or white melting chocolate
Orange decorators' gel
Fruit roll ups (various colors)
Gummy rings
Wax Paper

Melt 1 cup of white chocolate chips in the top of a double boiler or microwave.

One at a time, dip one end of an 8-inch pretzel rod in the melted chocolate and use a plastic spoon or knife to spread the chocolate two thirds of the way down the rod.

Set the pretzels on a sheet of waxed paper and press on mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons. Use orange decorators' gel to add a carrot nose.

When the chocolate has hardened, stand the pretzels in a mug or glass and tie on strips of fruit roll up for scarves. For each hat, stretch a gummy ring over the narrow end of a gumdrop and secure it on the pretzel rod with a dab of melted chocolate.

Hot Chocolate Cones

Ingredients Needed

Cocoa Mix
Cone-shaped cellophane bags (available at party stores and Michaels craft store) Size 6 x 12 inch.
Clear rubber bands
Chocolate Chips
Mini Marshmallows
Red gumdrops

How to Make it

Pour 3/4 cup  of cocoa mix into one of the cellophane bags.  Secure the bag with a clear rubber band. and trim the end of the bag 1 inch above the band.  Flatten the top of the bag (so it does not stick up) and place it into a second cellophane bag.  Then layer 1/4 cup of chocolate chips, and then 3/4 cup of marshmallows.  Top with a red gumdrop and secure the bag with a clear rubber band.

Veggie Tray

Use red and green vegetables such as red and green peppers, grape tomatoes, celery and broccoli.  Cut into bite size pieces and arrange on a tray.  Add some ranch dressing for dipping.

Ice Cream Sundae Party

Select a variety of topping such as M&Ms, crushed Oreo cookies, chopped Milky Way bars, and sprinkles

Include hot fudge sauce and caramel

Lots of whipped cream

Maraschino cherries

Keep the selection of ice cream to a minimum.  Sticking to vanilla is usually your best bet.

Have the kids come up in small groups. An adult should scoop out the ice cream and then have them select their own toppings. An adult should then add the whipped cream to their creation

The kids will love it!!!

Sugarplum Treats
Compliments of

Ingredients Needed:

14-ounce bag of candy melts
Craft sticks
10-ounce package of marshmallows
Assorted sprinkles, sugars, nuts, flaked coconut, and candy decoration

How to Make It

1. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray it with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Melt the candy coating according to the package directions.

3. Insert a craft stick into each marshmallow. Working one at a time, dip them into the melted candy coating, then into one of the decorations (for easy dipping, put the decorations in shallow bowls), and place them on the cookie sheet.

4. Once all the sugarplums are made, chill them in the freezer for 15 minutes. They can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days. If you like, wrap each treat in a cellophane candy bag (available at craft and party stores) tie with a ribbon. Makes 3 dozen.

Rice Krispie Snowman

Ingredients Needed:

450g box of rice krispies
1 bag of white marshmallows
2 tbl butter
white melting chocolate
candy - soft black licorice, milk/dark chocolate buttons, red sour strap, mini chocolate chips, raspberries (or other)

Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large pot till melted.
Add one bag of marshmallows and stir over a med heat until melted.
Add 3/4 of a 450g box of cereal.

Mix well and remove from heat.  Spread across a cookie sheet lined with wax paper to cool slightly until able to touch.  Coat hands with a small amount of butter and QUICKLY make cereal mixture into balls.  You will need two balls per snowman.  Use about 1 cup of mixture for a large ball and 3/4 cup for a small ball.  Use a dab of frosting to hold them together.

Be creative with decorating your snowman and use frosting to hold items in place.  Ideas...

Mouth: Red licorice, Red Hots

Buttons: Frosting, M and M's, chocolate chips
