Help With Sibling School
Separation

|
You will find that when your
older child begins school the younger sibling in many cases is
completely lost. Their playmate and partner in crime is gone and
they do not know what to do with themselves. They have spent the
beginning years of their life imitating their big sister or brother. You
must realize and be prepared to spend more time with them and try to
take their feelings into consideration.
There are many activities that you can plan that
will amuse them:
|
You can take a class together...

-
Swim lessons -- mommy and me classes are very
popular
-
Music classes are well received by toddlers
-
Check out your local library for their reading hour
schedule.
-
Many arts and craft stores have
classes for children.
|
Keep a picture Journal...
-
Once a week, in their journal,
have your child cut clippings from magazines or draw a picture of
the favorite thing that you did together that week. This
will give them a goal to achieve each week, practice on basic skills
and something to share with their older sibling.

|
Make your youngster part of their sibling's school experience...
-
Introduce
them to the teacher
-
Have them play on the playground
-
Bring them to events at the school both in and out
of the classroom
-
Have your older child tell the younger one how their day
went and let them show them the work that they completed
|
Recreate the school experience for them at home...

-
Purchase workbooks and begin to teach them how to
color in the lines and write their name
-
Have circle time with them and explain the days of
the week or seasons of the year
-
Do a reading session - pick out favorite books,
a special chair and take the time to read everyday. See our
reading list for some suggestions
-
Purchase a lunch box -- pack it with their lunch and
have a lunch hour. Especially for those children who have
siblings that are gone all day.
-
Try nap time with a mat on the floor.
It may just work!!!
-
Organize field trips to the park,
local museums, or indoor play facilities.
-
Don't forget Physical Education
class. It is a great time to kick a soccer ball, pitch a base
ball or jump rope.

Form a new playgroup...
