There is
something for everyone when visiting Jim Thorpe.
A restored railroad allows visitors to take a ride through the
area. You can tour a real anthracite coal mine or check
out a fantastic model train display. Check out the Harry
Packer Mansion and see if it reminds you of a ride in Disney
World. You may want to visit the old jail museum or simply
visit the shops and have a great meal.

No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum

Ride a
rail car into an Anthracite mine and then continue to
experience the adventures with a walking tour within the
mine. This is a great adventure for the whole family.
I went on this tour with my daughter's 4th grade class and
we had a great time. When you first get into the rail
car and start to travel into the mine your first thoughts
are "Should I really be doing this?" However, when you
arrive at your destination you will be pleasantly surprised
to see that you are in a very large, well lit area.
You are then guided through areas of the mine, some of which
are a more narrow and dark. You will see some amazing
sites and hear some terrific stories. Some of the
interesting sites are the miner's hospital, original
elevator shaft and the underground mule way. Great fun --
highly recommend it.
The
museum is filled with original mining equipment and
artifacts.
Free
parking and picnic facilities are available.

seven of the accused coal miners known as the Molly Maguires
