Beautiful
beaches, warm tropical weather, and gorgeous water are what comes to
mind when we think of St. Martin. There are however many other
attractions for tourists to see.
First to explain
the name, the southern Dutch half
is called Sint Maarten and is
part of the Netherlands Antilles.
The northern French half is
called Saint-Martin and is
part of the French overseas region
and department of Guadeloupe.
St Martin
presents many interesting contrasts for visitors. You will find
everything from beautiful, wide beaches along the coast to quiet,
country towns in the hillsides.
Horseback riding,
snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing,
kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, sailing and deep sea fishing are some
of the most popular activities on St. Maarten and St. Martin.
Visitors
also enjoy the Loterie Farm, which is private nature preserve that is
designed to preserve the island's habitat. The Fly Zone Extreme, at
Loterie Farm's, allows you to soar over the forest canopy via a series
of ropes, cables, and suspended bridges.
St. Maarten Zoological and Botanical
Garden, exhibits animals and plants of the Caribbean and South America.
The Butterfly Farm, as
well as the Plantation Mont Vernon park and museum are great fun for
all.
The
shopping is terrific with about
500 duty-free shops on St. Maarten with prices 25% to 50% below those in
the U.S. For history lovers the
town of Philipsburg boasts the remains of two historic forts: Fort
Amsterdam and Fort Willem. The views alone from these forts are
worth the visit.
