Tropical Vacation Packing Checklist

Listed below is a checklist of items that you should consider when packing for vacation.

  • Always place all important documents such as your passport,  tickets, travel insurance documents, hotel contact numbers, emergency numbers in a bag that's easily accessible, and carry it with you on your flights.

  • When going to a warm climate always pack your swimsuit, sunscreen, beach shoes in a carry-on bag so you can hit the pool if your room isn't ready when you arrive. The front desk will store your suitcases for you until you can check in.

  • Snacks for travel are always a good idea especially if you are traveling with children.  Airport food is quite expensive.

  • Be sure to include a good book or magazines for the flight as well as sitting at the pool.

  • If your resort offers an upscale restaurant that you plan to visit check in advance to see the dress code and bring the appropriate clothes.

  • Be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater because sometimes evening breezes can be cool.

  • Sunscreen with a high SPF, hat or visor and sunglasses are a necessity in tropical climates.

  • If you expect to do any hiking, you might also add insect repellent to the list.

  • Scuba divers should bring their diving certification card.

  • A few resorts offer horseback riding along the beach. If you plan to do this, bring long pants.

  • Make sure you have a pen in your bag for filling out custom forms.

  • Pack a deck of cards and electronic devices for music and games into your carry-on bag for long delays and layovers at airports. This is especially useful if you're traveling with kids.

  • Bring camera film or memory cards and extra camera batteries from home, as these items can be pricey if purchased at a resort.

  • Pack an extra pair of contacts or glasses.

  • Put prescription medicines in your carry-on bag, in case your checked luggage is delayed.

  • If you have a laptop computer and you want to stay connected to home or work, find out if your hotel has in-room or wireless Internet access. Always carry your laptop onboard your flights.

  • Some resorts do not have wash clothes so you may want to put a few in your suitcase.
