AGE GROUP BOYS AND GIRLS 5 - ADULT

Violin Maintenance

  • Avoid exposing your instrument to extreme temperatures.  Never leave it in the car in the cold or heat or humidity.  Extreme temperatures can cause the instrument to crack or fall out of tune.  Keep the instrument inside the car rather than in the trunk.

  • Have your teacher or an expert at the music shop tune your instrument. It takes time to learn how to do it properly and you could damage the instrument or break strings if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

  • You instrument should be kept securely in its case when it is not being used.  It is important to securely lock the bow in place and to remove the shoulder pad prior to shutting the case.  Failure to put your instrument away properly could result in damage.  Never leave in out where someone could accidentally knock it down.

  • Keep your instrument clean.  Each time you play it you should clean it with a lint-free cloth.  Keep this cloth inside your case and wipe off all the rosin dust and dirt from your instrument before storing it. Be careful when cleaning to prevent damage.  Never use any kind of cleaning ingredients on your instrument.

Bow Maintenance

  • As a student you should use rosin on your bow at least once per week.  Do not put an excessive amount or it will produce harsh tone due to excessive build up.

  • Always loosen the hair on your bow after playing before you place it back in the case.  Be careful not to over-tighten the bow before using it again. The bow stick should still maintain a natural arch when tightened appropriately.
