Football Terminology

        

  As with any sport, specific terminology is used to describe the equipment, and explain the techniques. Listed are some commonly used terms within the football community.
Dead ball  

Ball not in play.

 

Double Foul  

A foul by each team during the same down.

 

Down  

Period when the ball is put in play and ends when it is dead.

 

Fair Catch  

Unhindered catch of a kick by a member of the receiving team.

 

Foul  

Violation of a rule.

 

Free Kick  

Kick off or Safety kick. 

 

Fumble  

Ball is dropped during play.

 

Game Clock  

Scoreboard game clock.

 

Live Ball  

A ball that has been free kicked or snapped to the quarter back.

 

Loose Ball  

A ball that is not in possession.

 

Punt  

A kick made when a player drops the ball and kicks it in the air.

 

Touchdown  

When a player in possession of the ball crosses the opponent's goal line.
