Soccer Player Positions

Goalie Goalkeeper Position Basic soccer position Positioned in front of the goal to prevent scoring.

 

Sweeper Defense Position Basic soccer position Team's last line of defense in front of the goalie.  This position is not always used.

 

Stopper Defense Position Advanced soccer position Player who guards the best scorer on the attacking team.

 

Fullback Defense Position Basic soccer position Rear defender.

 

Midfielder

Halfback

Midfield Position Basic soccer position Positioned in the middle third to the field between forwards and defenders.  They play both offense and defense.

 

Forward Offense Position Basic soccer position Plays in front of the rest of the team.  Normally responsible for scoring.

 

Wing Offense Position Advanced soccer position The outside forwards and midfielders who play on the sides of the fields.  Often the fastest players and best dribblers.

 

Striker Offense Position Basic soccer position Team's most powerful and best-scoring forward who  plays toward the center of the field.
